Kathryn Brady Commented on Group 4.
Monthly Summary for April.
Group 3: Dawn, Kathy, Kim and Oscar.
This month, our group focused on the E- Archive assignment
and the final group paper. We used the same approach that we had during all the
other group assignments and that is having each member of the group work on a
section of the paper before compiling it together.
We agreed to use Prezi for the e-archive assignment. Dawn then
reviewed the assignments that we have completed so far and picked the main points
from them for Oscar to use in setting up the e-Archive. Kathy was charged with
the responsibility of finding images, pictures, quotes and anything that was
relevant to be included in the archive. Kim then wrote.
We all went through the work to see if anything else needed
to be added or taken off it though there was nothing really because everyone
outdid themselves to come up with an amazing job. Kim and Oscar then went ahead
and posted the papers and the e-archive onto the required sites.
This being among the last batch of assignments due for the
course and the fact that we have tackled previous assignments together helped
things run smoothly., We did not encounter any challenges whatsoever.
Everyone worked diligently on their assigned roles and presented
the required text and other materials in due time.
Group effort is important in coursework and in a professional
capacity. What could initially seem to be a daunting task is achieved well,
less fraught with challenges and finished in good time. It creates room for
different perspectives and opinions resulting in a more informative project.

Monthly Summary for March
Group #3 – Kathryn Brady, Dawn Fewell, Oscar Guajardo, and
Kimberly Neal
How did we organize and communicate this month?
This month our group continued to organize by creating a table
with each person’s assignment and due date.
This seems to really help our group stay focused since our timeline
seemed a little tighter than the last project with having spring break during
this time period. We split the
Organization project into four sections and then one group member put all the
pieces together and proofed the citations and references. Then, the final draft was sent to everyone
for review. This process worked and we
were able to complete the project on time.
We have continued to use email and texting as our form of communication
which has worked out very well for us.
What were the challenges and what did we do to resolve them?
Everything has gone pretty smoothly this month. We all completed our responsibilities by the
agreed upon deadlines and kept communication open.
How can we apply what we learned this month to our
professional lives?
It is important to know about the different types of
organizations which provide programs and many types of benefits to people
wanting to continue their education. By
researching these organizations and learning more about them, we can provide
this information to others seeking help.
We may be familiar with an organization but not really know what they do
for people. For example both of the
organizations we studied for our paper, The United States Armed Forces and The
Carnegie Corporation of New York are familiar to most people. However, we were amazed at the contributions
both organizations have made to adult education which continue to this
day. As we have learned through the
weekly reading and videos, being a professional means different things to
different people. It is related to
knowing our subject matter and being good at what we do, displaying an outward
appearance of confidence and authenticity, holding ourselves to a high standard
of character and behavior, and continually learning in order to help make our
workplace and community a better place for everyone.
What are the plans for next month?
As
soon as we finished the organizations project, we began communicating through
texting about what we needed to do for the E-Archive. All of us reviewed the syllabus and looked at
the examples to get ideas of what we wanted.
We are in the process of finalizing our final project theme. We have assigned jobs and deadlines to turn
in the work. We will all provide feedback to each other for each part
of the project, but we have created this breakdown of how we anticipate
the workload to be divided up:
March 30
ü Agree on theme for e-Archive
April 3rd
ü Dawn - review assignments 1-3 and draw out main points, put into
bullets, outline, or other format -- Oscar will use this for electronic
portion
ü Kathy - find images, pictures, quotes, etc. on the internet related
to Adult Education and the information we covered in class for Oscar to use in
electronic media
ü Kim -- I will write the one-page paper, Dawn & I will communicate main
points so these two things align.
April 7
ü Group reviews all the information
from Dawn, Kathy and Kim and makes any edits needed - hand off to Oscar
April 16
ü Oscar posts e-Archive to blog, Kim posts paper to blog and Blackboard

This month’s group work
activity provided an opportunity for all of us to get to know each other a bit
more and individual roles in relation to the project were determined. Previously we decided to use email and text
as our primary communication methods and thus far it has worked well. We started off the month reviewing our Group
Plan and determining what jobs needed to be accomplished, and who would be
responsible. We split the Adult Educator
project into four areas: two people researching, and two people writing the
submission. Then, one person volunteered
to put it all together and then we all will review the final draft. We agreed upon dates for each part of the
plan to be completed. The Group Plan really
helped keep things in order and created a reasonable timeline that everyone
agreed on. However, any time you try to
predict a timeline, there will always be things to come up. I think our group did a great job with working
around any issues that came up, kept the lines of communication open (so
important!) and continued working towards completing the group project. As we move on to the next topic, we will be
better prepared on how and what to do because we now have a “blueprint” to go
by. This time around was a learning
experience for all of us, and as we look ahead to the next group assignment we
can build on what we have learned. The
benefit of working as a group was being able to ask questions to get
clarification on things we did not understand.
Several group members commented that they found the information gathered
about the two adult and community educators very informative. The two people our group selected were unique
in that one was influential although not primarily an educator, and the other
was a great researcher in addition to his work in the classroom. This is reflective of the broad and complex
nature of adult and community education, and demonstrates that you don’t
necessarily have to be an educator to make a difference in education.
It has been a busy month. The readings about the discussion posts have been quite educating and full of insight. I put in my paper and went through the Professor's comments which are very constructive and help me improve the content of my papers. Adult education goes a long way is shaping society. In my opinion, there will never be a point when one is fully educated, there's always something new to learn out there. Wish everyone well in this class.
ReplyDeleteA group of four i meant to say, pardon me please, thank you.
ReplyDeleteHello Group 3,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like it was a great month for you! I am new at the online group projects and I was terrified at first. It is encouraging to notice all of the positive experiences that groups are having I am excited to review your work! Great job working together!!!

Hi Group 3,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
Communication is definitely important, and we have found it to be very important in Group 1. I have definitely found group work to be helpful in creating a community despite the online distance. How do you guys think you will be able to use the lessons learned from your educators in your future careers? Do you think it will influence where you go with your careers?
I am glad your group was able to find a way to work out your communication plan. I have learned from previous experiences that it can be difficult to get everyone figure out an effective communication plan. I am looking forward to reading about your two educators.
ReplyDeleteHello Group 3 - I am interested to know how 2 people researching and 2 people writing worked? Did all group members feel that the work was evenly divided? It seems to me that the writers would have more work to do. Although, if roles are switched for the next project I guess the work would even out.
ReplyDeleteThanks Christy
I cant' speak for the other members but I did the research portion of this assignment and it took quite a bit of time and effort. I organized/summarized my research in paragraph form so that the person doing the writing could build on what I started and provided the references as well. I could see if someone just wrote bullets or summary sentences that the writing portion would be considerably longer that's why I chose to do it that way because keeping workloads even is so important. And yes, we are switching roles as we do each project so everyone will be doing some writing this time.
DeleteHello Group 3,
ReplyDeleteWow, that is an interesting division of work! Our group decided to split the work up a little differently, our group is actually split by time zones (which to me is kind of fun), est and pst. This first assignment we split by time zones and each set chose an educator, topics were then divided within the sets. So, one of us had the background, profile, perspective and the other had the contribution, impact, and implication in each set. We then brought it all together in a Google Doc, reviewed and edited it together. Our biggest problem was actually having to cut some of the information out because the length of our paper was rather large! But we had a good experience and it seems that your group did as well!
It is great to hear that you all figured out how to communicate, because communication is key to a successful online group project. Wish you all the best as we move forward to our next task.
Glory
I SO agree with your comment about things coming up that cannot be predicted when making a timeline. My group (group 1) has been so great about going with the flow. Each of us has had something come up that was not predicted, including sick kids, a funeral, and just general business with work. It has been so nice to see each group member be so understanding. Even with all the things that life has thrown at us, we have all finished our parts of the assignment on time.
ReplyDeleteHello group three, reading your summary I can tell your group is very organized and task orientated. The benefit of your organizational skills was evident in the group paper you wrote this week. Good job group three.

ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your group is working really well together. I agree that communication is key to getting everything organized for projects. We've been really lucky in our group to have different personalities where we all kind of fulfill our roles, and we're also very flexible in our approach. This class has contained more group work than I expected, and while I tend to be a person who enjoys working alone, I feel that I'm learning a lot about myself and my capacity to work with others on distance work and assignments. Best of luck to you all as you continue in the course.
ReplyDeleteHi group 3! It looks like you have a thorough plan for your e-archive assignment. What type of electronic media do you plan to use for the assignment?
ReplyDeleteHi Group 3,
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear things went so smoothly for your e-archive and one pager. I definitely also noticed that our group ran more smoothly this month as we have gotten to know each other better and what we expect of each other.
I see that you have all your monthly assignments in one blog post. What is your reasoning for this? Do you think it is a technique you would encourage other groups in future classes to do? Why or why not?
Hi Group 3!
ReplyDeleteIt really seems like by the end of the term you were all working like clockwork! You really understood your roles and ended the term on a high note. Congratulations on a successful term and a great group project!
